Here's a very lovely poem we did in EL today.
It's by Merrill Glass:
Remember the time you lent me your car and I dented it?
I thought you'd kill me...
but you didn't.
Remember the time I forgot to tell you the dance was formal
and you came in jeans?
I thought you'd hate me...
But you didn't
Remember the times I'd flirt with other boys
just to make you jealous, and you were?
I thought you'd drop me...
But you didn't.
There were plenty of things you did to put up with me,
to keep me happy, to love me and there are so many things
I wanted to tell you when you returned from Vietnam...
But you didn't.
I won't say I've been though a mountain of friendship problems to be called an expert,
But I've had enough problems and friends to know that the main cause must be miscommunication.
Talk, friends, talk.
Misunderstandings and messengers don't really make you friendship road smooth.
The most important thing to me, is that friends trust and also talk.
Some problems arise from over-loving, leading to insecurities should the other party begin to grow fond of others. Jealousy grows and worry woes, shyness and "gutlessness". Why don't people speak their minds if they say they are friends?
Muse.
She thought:
Some others happen because of discrimination of friends and competition for friends between friends. Why? Why do you always hurt others for the sake of the few? I never knew what unreasonable and despicable was until I met you. I don't know why I put up with it then, but perhaps it has helped me grow stronger to believe that the only friend I have is myself.
